How Vacuum Insulation Actually Works

A vacuum insulated flask has two walls made of stainless steel with no air left in between them. The absence of any air in between the walls prevents any convective heat transfer — the main method of heat transfer for beverage cooling — making vacuum insulated flask far better than normal double wall flask.

It is important to know the difference as there is a lot of difference between double wall flask and vacuum insulated flask. On lid quality specifically: the lid accounts for a disproportionate share of heat loss in most bottles. A well-constructed vacuum body paired with a poorly fitting lid will underperform. Ask suppliers for leak-proof or test data on lid seal integrity, not just on the bottle body.


About Customization Options

Here lies the question that most product catalogs do not address: which of the customization services offered will affect the bottle’s insulation performance and which one will not?

  • No impact on insulation performance: laser engraving, powder coat painting, pad printing, and UV printing are all done on the outer wall. None of those methods touches the vacuum layer or inner wall and therefore does not influence the bottle’s thermal performance.   • To be confirmed with your supplier: Full-wrap printing or other special coating process performed on the whole outer surface may rarely influence the heat dissipation of the outer wall — not significantly, however, still to be verified if insulation performance is a key feature of your product. Lid coloring is safe customization method in most cases, but it would be good to confirm that material of seal and gasket will stay the same if you specify another lid color than standard.
