Safety issues are not a matter of the general material type but rather about the particular grade and its manufacturing.

Is Stainless Steel Safe for Drinking?

Food-grade stainless steel is one of the safety material for water bottle. It is chemically stable under normal conditions, so it does not react with water, coffee, or many of drinks. This material is BPA-free and without phthalates. That means it does not release any compounds into water or beverages that it holds. Also, it does not absorb flavors or odor.

304 vs 316: Which One Do You Actually Need?

304 stainless steel (also known as 18/8, referring to its 18% chromium and 8% nickel content) is the insudtry standard for drinkware. Ideal for coffee, tea and most everyday beverages without problem. More ever, it’s easy to clean and durable, supports the full range of surface finishes and decoration methods.

316 steel has added molybdenum. This addition increases the resistance against chlorides and acids. When making drinkware for regular water consumption, the difference between the two materials is minimal. However, when the bottle will come into prolonged contact with acid drinks or are part of luxury vessels, then 316 is recommended.

201 steel poses a problem is corrosion resistance. 201 does not withstand interaction with acid-containing beverages, such as coffee, lemon juice, kombucha, and other drinks. Over time, corrosion begins due to prolonged interaction with the metal, causing trace elements to migrate into the liquid, which is a real case in the use of low-quality drinkware.

What Certifications Actually Mean

The certifications are the practical proof of the compliance of the product with the food safety requirements. But, if you know little about each type of them and how to ensure that they are authentic, certifications are meaningless.

FDA compliance – All products in the United States are expected to meet FDA requirements. However, FDA compliance means nothing similar to certification. In particular, the product should be compliant with FDA regulations according to 21 CFR, which means that no harmful substances exceeding the prescribed level of migration are used.

LFGB (Germany/EU) – Usually, this standard is even more strict than FDA standards since it involves testing migration of more substances. Any LFGB certified products are tested in an accredited third-party laboratory, not certified by the manufacturer.

Third-party certification – Such as SGS and Intertek, these companies are independent laboratories, not regulating agencies. Having received the certificate means that some particular batch of product underwent independent testing by a trustworthy third party.

The question that you should always pose to the supplier: do you have a test report on the product? A test report is not the same as certification images. Reports involve batch number, date, and specific test results. Without a report, it will be hard for you to verify the authenticity of a certificate. Moreover, fake certificates often do not have reports linked to them at all.

Red Flags When Sourcing Stainless Steel Bottles

  • No material test reports available – Word of mouth is no replacement for paperwork.
  • Unclear grade – Any company that sells a “stainless steel” item but does not mention the grade should raise suspicion.
  • A price tag is notably lower than market – There is a floor price for 304 steel. If a seller is offering a price that is noticeably lower compared to similar products from reputable companies, chances are there has been some sort of material substitution along the way.
  • Magnetic test offered as proof – This is not a reliable method, as both 201 and 304 may have a slight attraction to magnets.
