How to Choose
ODM is the proper approach to start with for most new brands. You choose an existing product from the factory’s range, brand it with your name and colors, and create your own packaging. This allows you to enter the market without incurring tooling costs or spending months on development. One limitation to be aware of is that: ODM products are made using molds that can be used by another brand. Therefore, your differentiation will be in branding, packaging, and positioning rather than the product’s shape.
OEM standard customization is an option when you already have all the specifications defined and approved, such as steel grade, capacity, finish, and lid type. You also won’t need tooling. This is the best approach once you have validated demand and your needs.
OEM custom mold development creates a unique product for your brand that cannot be replicated by anyone else. However, it requires the greatest investment and the longest development time. This approach is usually taken once sales volume has been achieved, not before.
A practical approach for new brands is to start with ODM to validate the market and generate revenue. Then, switch to OEM standard customization once the specifications are established. Finally, proceed to OEM custom mold development when the volume and brand identity are ready.



Step 4: Certifications You’ll Actually Need
Certification requirements vary depending on your target market. Below is a summary of the criteria by geographical area:
US market: Food contact compliance under FDA regulations. Note that the FDA does not issue certifications directly, but rather confirms compliance through third-party test reports indicating adherence to applicable standards. For sales in the state of California, Prop 65 compliance is also mandatory, especially regarding lead content in vacuum seal and lid materials.
EU & German market: LFGB test reports are practically required by European retailers and marketplaces. This is true regardless of whether it is mandated by law. The LFGB standard is stricter than the FDA standard and incorporates sensory testing for taste and odor transfer.
Multi-markets: FDA and LFGB compliance will cover most major markets. The LFGB standard is recognized in the UK after Brexit.

Step 5: Plan Your First Order



Quantity
An appropriate quantity of the product for the first order as an ODM is 100-500 units per SKU. This allows you to generate meaningful sales numbers without overexposing your budget to one particular product. Try not to negotiate the MOQ. While some manufacturers are willing to produce fewer than 50 products, the increased per-unit price would make it economically unfeasible.
Sampling
You should always approve physical pre-production samples before starting production. It’s easier to assess details such as logo placement, printing quality, lid mechanism, color accuracy, and product quality in person than in a digital model. Plan for at least one round of sampling in terms of time and money. Two rounds may be needed if revisions are required.

Many first-time buyers only budget for the cost of the product. Depending on your destination market, freight and import duties may add 20%-40% to the ex-works unit cost.
